What life lessons do you pay forward to those around you?
I like to think that I demonstrate the lessons of patience to those around me. During spring break, I went home to Las Vegas and went grocery shopping with my mom. I remember getting out of the car and by the time I had come to the driver's side, my mom was already halfway down the parking lot. She's a very busy women and is always on the go, except the grocery store was our last errand of the night, and we didn't have to be anywhere after we were finished. I caught up to her and asked, "What's the rush? You can slow down a little bit". I think this actually took her off-guard because she is so used to having to go go go, she never takes the time to slow down and reflect on her life.
How is your ability to teach displayed in your tours and how does it relate back to your why for being a tour guide?
I love making connections with people - so largely my ability to teach is displayed through how I connect with different people. I wanted to be a tour guide because I felt I would have a lot to add as a communicator; I felt I could better bridge the gap between prospective students and college life. As I've shadowed and given my own tours, I realize the art of teaching is subtle. Everyone does it in their own way, but that connection has to be made before anything can be taught or learned. So, in order to 'teach' well, I make sure I make strong connections with the people I meet on tours before the tour begins.
Based on the interaction with the honors advisors, how can you put your further plans for education into action?
The honors program unlocks many unique opportunities for students looking to further their education. While my schedule is extremely hectic within CCM, I could talk with my honors advisor to plan out additional experiential learning opportunities. I have a strong desire to study abroad, and I feel I could work with my advisor to formulate a plan that fits within my schedule here at school and fulfills my educational goals.
What would you say to someone who said getting a college education isn't worth it?
Everyone has different circumstances, but to those who have the means to attend college, I would implore them to reconsider their perspective. College presents the opportunity to meet new people, learn a variety of subjects and redefine the person you want to be. Attending UC has given me the ability to build a strong foundation for myself, in a professional and holistic sense. I've developed so much from high school, and I attribute that growth to the experiences I've accumulated during my time in college.
