Ultimately, this trip proved to be an immensely educational and thrilling adventure. I wasn’t quite sure how a family vacation could work as an Honors experience, but I believe I was successful and our trip simply benefited more from the additional research and reflection I put into it. I learned an incredible amount in regards to the culture of the different places I visited, and I got a much better sense of how ‘green’ Australia is, and on the whole, I’d say they’re very ‘green’, almost greener than the United States. Tourism is a major industry for them, so it’s in their best interest to keep their national landmarks healthy and thriving for centuries to come. I think people should do that anyway, but money is always an incentive.
I also can’t remember the last time I had so much fun with my mom and my sister. My sister graduated from high school and she had a busy and stressful senior year, and I know my mom is worried about being alone for the first time, so this trip was good for us as a family to spend time together and make memories that we’ll always cherish.
In the future, I think I’ll switch my reflection medium to something a little less time-consuming. I love writing, but perhaps doing a vlog or podcast or something like that will allow me enjoy the place I’m in a little bit more and give me a great way to express my reflections and experiences. However, this was truly my first self-designed proposal that got up off the ground, and coming off this trip I’m surprised with how well it went and how seamlessly I was able to integrate into my trip. This flexibility is a huge strength of the Honors Program. Finally, I’ll be updating this blog with pictures as I edit them, so come back and keep checking to see any new posts I add.
